Toronto Small Press Group

Featured Press

Tell us a little bit about your small press, such as it's original history.

The sweetie pie press was originally an unofficial offshoot of a loose group of people called the sweetie pie tulip boys and girls club (which was basically the invention of a fine man named reuben mclaughlin - he has since gone on the founding of the pilot pocket book with some other sweetie pies). when the club fell apart in the wake of romantic break-ups, i had already started the press and reuben was kind enough to let me keep using the name. it has since turned into the banner under which i do all sorts of creative and crafty things.

What does being part of the small press community mean to you?

I am very inspired by the small press community. it is also a place from which many important friendships have spring for me - like tara bursey and shannon gerard and kim kutner and nicholas kennedy and missy kulik. come to think of it, i have ended up working on somethingorother with each of those people (and others). for me, the small press community is a place to do things that serve only my creative life and a place to support other in doing the same.

What inspired you to start your own small press?

i wanted to write and i wanted to write on my own terms. i did not want to worry about the financial viability of my writing projects - so i got to photocopying.

What projects are you currently working on?

I am currently focusing mostly on some 1" button projects (the financially supportive offshoot of the sweetie pie press). most excitingly, i started working with other artists on commission in the designing of button sets. hopefully i will also do some new issues of my zines point form (a zine of lists) and a cette dame (a zine of very very very short stories). but i have been saying that for a while now. oh, i have also started a blog this year. it may sound dumb, but i like keeping it an awful lot. anything that removes the obstacles to getting writing done and into the world is a-ok to me.

Where can small press fans find your press next?

I am touring around america at the moment. i am ashamed to say that the tour is so long and potentially rainy that i decided to forgo bringing zines. actually, i am in the pouring rain in baltimore as i write this and am not regretting my lack of zines. in toronto, my next confirmed event is city of craft - a holiday fair and general handmade cluture event that i am involved in coordinating with jen anisef (the toronto craft alert) and leah buckareff (coldsnap bindery). it's pretty keen. you should probably come to that.
